Dragon Quest VIII Mobile Hitting Japan This Month at an Insane Price

Though Square Enix announced mobile remakes of the first eight Dragon Quest games for 2014, Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest VIII will be hitting iOS and Android smartphones and tablets this year after all… in Japan, at least. The first entry in the series is actually already available for download in the Far East as of last Thursday, and Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King will be launching on App Store and Play Store on December 12th.

What many will find ludicrous is the price tag of this mobile port of the 2004 PS2 RPG – it’s going to be sold for 2,800 yen, which amounts to approximately 27 US dollars. Yeah, that really is insane, even for Square’s standards. Still, it should at the very least get a mild reception in Japan, as Square ran a huge promotion during which it gave away one million mobile copies of the original Dragon Quest last week, a game that’s now available for purchase for around $4.99.

There’s still no official confirmation of English localizations of either of those games, though it’s a safe bet they’ll be making their way to the west eventually.

I wouldn’t pay that much for a remastered PS3 edition, let alone a clunky mobile port.
